Neem Karoli Baba:
The Saint of Devotion and Miracles

Neem Karoli Baba, born Lakshman Narayan Sharma around 1900 in Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh, was a humble mystic and saint who transformed countless lives through his teachings of unconditional love, service, and devotion. Known by various names including Baba Lakshman Das, Tikonia Baba, and ultimately Neem Karoli Baba, he emphasized:

Global Influence:

Though Baba never left India, his influence spread worldwide through disciples who encountered him in the 1960s and 70s. Notable among them:

Ram Dass: Former Harvard professor Richard Alpert met Baba during a life-changing trip to India. Neem Karoli Baba gave him a new name, Ram Dass, and opened his heart to unconditional love and service. Ram Dass returned to the West and authored Be Here Now, a spiritual classic that has guided generations of seekers.

Krishna Das: A disciple of Maharaj-ji, Krishna Das became a pioneer of devotional music in the West. His soul-stirring kirtans are infused with the essence of Baba’s love. He credits Neem Karoli Baba with saving his life and providing the spiritual grounding that continues to inspire his global audience.

Jai Uttal: An early devotee, Jai Uttal brought bhakti music to mainstream audiences through his fusion of Indian devotional music with global rhythms. Deeply moved by Maharaj-ji’s grace, his performances reflect a heartfelt surrender to the divine, keeping Baba’s spirit alive in the hearts of many.

Larry Brilliant: A physician and epidemiologist, Larry Brilliant was inspired by Neem Karoli Baba to dedicate his life to selfless service. Baba encouraged him to join the World Health Organization, where he played a key role in eradicating smallpox—one of the greatest public health achievements in history.

Daniel Goleman: The renowned psychologist and author of Emotional Intelligence also encountered Neem Karoli Baba in India. Goleman was profoundly affected by Baba’s peaceful presence and compassion, which shaped his lifelong interest in mindfulness, empathy, and emotional awareness.

His legacy helped popularize Eastern spirituality, kirtan, yoga, and devotional practices globally.

Neem Karoli Baba attained Mahasamadhi on September 11, 1973, in Vrindavan. Today, his presence is still felt through photos, stories, and the deep connection his devotees share. He remains a guiding force for those on the path of devotion.
